Should I Remove Snow from My Roof?
It Depends.
Here in New York, we can get piles of snow in a short amount of time. While it may seem like a good idea to remove all the snow to prevent damage to your roof, it’s not always necessary.
In fact, removing snow from your roof can be dangerous and cause damage to your roof if not done properly.
The amount of snow that your roof can handle depends on several factors, including the roof’s age, design, and condition.
Most modern roofs in Rockland County can handle the weight of snow without any problems.
However, if your roof is old or in poor condition, you may need to remove the snow to prevent damage.
Additionally, you may need to remove snow from your roof to prevent ice dams from forming. Ice dams can cause water to back up under your roof and cause damage to your home’s interior.
Understanding the Risks
When it comes to snow accumulation on your roof, it’s important to understand the risks involved.
Here are some of the most significant risks associated with leaving snow on your roof:
Weight of Snow
The weight of snow can put a significant amount of stress on your roof.
For example, a cubic foot of snow can weigh between 7 and 20 pounds, depending on how wet or fluffy it is. This means that even a small amount of snow can sometimes add up to a significant amount of weight on your roof.
If your roof is unable to support the weight of the snow, it could collapse. This is especially true if your roof is already weakened due to age, damage, or poor construction.
Ice Dams Formation
Another risk associated with leaving snow on your roof is the formation of ice dams.
Ice dams occur when snow on the roof melts and then refreezes at the edge of the roof. This can create a barrier that prevents additional snowmelt from draining off the roof, leading to water damage inside your home.
Ice dams can also cause damage to your roof, gutters, and downspouts.
As water accumulates behind the ice dam, it can seep into your roof, causing damage to the shingles, underlayment, and decking.
Structural Damage
Finally, leaving snow on your roof can cause structural damage to your home.
As snow and ice accumulate on your roof, it can cause the roof to warp, sag, or even crumble. This can lead to damage to other parts of your home, including walls, ceilings, and floors.
It’s important to remove snow from your roof as soon as possible to prevent these risks from occurring. However, it’s also important to do so safely. In the next section, we’ll discuss some tips for safely removing snow from your roof.
When and How to Remove Snow
While snow can be a beautiful sight in the dark winter months, it can also pose a risk to your home’s structural integrity. Here’s what you need to know about when and how to remove snow from your roof.
Signs of Excessive Snow Load
The first step in determining whether you should remove snow from your roof is to look for signs of excessive snow load. These signs include:
- Sagging roof
- Cracks in the walls or ceilings
- Doors and windows that are difficult to open or close
- Popping or cracking sounds coming from the roof
If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to remove the snow from your roof.
Safe Snow Removal Methods
When it comes to removing snow from your roof, safety should be your top priority. Here are some safe snow removal methods:
- Use a snow rake: A snow rake is a long-handled tool that allows you to remove snow from the ground. This is the safest method for removing snow from your roof, as it does not require you to climb onto the roof.
- Use a ladder: If you must climb onto the roof, use a sturdy ladder that is long enough to reach the roof safely. Make sure the ladder is securely anchored and that someone is holding it steady.
- Hire a professional (Recommended): If you are not comfortable removing snow from your roof, or if your roof is too steep or high, hire a professional like Segelman Shaw to do the job for you.
