What Should I Do If My Skylight is Leaking?
If your skylight is leaking, it can be a frustrating and potentially dangerous problem.
Many types of water damage can lead to mold growth, structural damage, and other issues that can be costly to repair.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to address the issue and prevent further damage.
First, it’s important to identify the source of the leak. This can be tricky, as water can travel along rafters, joists, and other building materials before it becomes visible. Look for signs of water damage, such as staining or discoloration on the ceiling or walls near the skylight.
You may also notice water dripping or pooling around the skylight itself.
Once you’ve identified the general area of the leak, you can start to investigate further to pinpoint the exact source.
Next, you’ll need to take steps to stop the leak and prevent further damage. Depending on the cause of the leak, this may involve sealing gaps or cracks around the skylight, replacing damaged flashing, or installing a new skylight altogether.
In many cases, you may need to hire a professional contractor to make the necessary repairs. In any case, it’s important to act quickly to prevent further damage and minimize the cost of repairs.
Identifying the Leak
If you have a leaking skylight, it’s important to take action right away to prevent further damage to your home. Here are some steps to follow to identify the leak:
Assessing the Damage
The first thing you should do is assess the damage. Look for any signs of water damage or mold on the ceiling or walls near the skylight.
If you notice any discoloration or dampness, it’s likely that there is a leak. You should also check the area around the skylight for any signs of damage, such as cracks or gaps in the sealant.
Locating the Source
There are several possible sources of a skylight leak, including:
Faulty flashing: The flashing around the skylight is designed to prevent water from seeping in. If the flashing is damaged or improperly installed, water can leak through.
Cracked or damaged glass: If the glass in the skylight is cracked or damaged, water can seep through the cracks and into your home.
Condensation: Sometimes, what appears to be a leak is actually just condensation on the inside of the skylight. Condensation can occur when warm, moist air inside your home meets the cold surface of the skylight.
Clogged weep holes: Weep holes are small openings in the skylight frame that allow water to drain out. If these holes become clogged with debris, water can build up and leak into your home.
Taking Immediate Actions
If you notice a skylight leaking, it’s important to take immediate action to prevent water damage to your home. Here are some steps you can take right away:
Contain Water Damage
The first thing you should do is contain any water damage.
Move furniture and other valuables away from the area and place a bucket or other container under the leak to catch any water.
If you notice water pooling on the floor, use a wet/dry vacuum to remove it. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and boots to protect yourself from any electrical hazards.
Temporary Fixes
While you wait for a professional to fix the leak, there are a few temporary fixes you can try.
First, check to make sure the skylight is fully closed. If it’s not, close it and see if the leaking stops.
Another common cause of leaking skylights is condensation. If you suspect this is the cause, improve the ventilation in the room with a portable fan, ceiling fan, or dehumidifier. You can also apply anti-fogging products to the skylight.
If these temporary fixes don’t work, it’s time to call in a professional. Trying to fix the leak yourself can be dangerous and may cause further damage to your home. A professional like Segelman Shaw Roofing, Siding & Gutters will be able to diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action to fix it.
