What to Do If a Tree Falls on Your House
If a tree falls on your house, it can be a terrifying experience. Your first priority should always be to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones.
Once you’ve made sure everyone is safe, you should take proactive steps to assess the damage and begin the process of repairing your home.
The first thing you should do is contact your insurance company. They will be able to guide you through the claims process and provide you with information on what is covered under your policy.
Immediate Actions
Here are a few immediate actions you should take.
Ensure Safety
The first thing you should do is ensure that everyone in the house is safe. If anyone is seriously injured, call 911 immediately.
If the tree has caused significant damage to your home, it may not be safe to remain inside. If this is the case, evacuate the house and wait for emergency services to arrive.
Contact Authorities
After ensuring everyone is safe, you should contact the authorities.
Call your local fire department or police department to report the incident.
They will assess the situation and determine if additional resources are needed.
Document the Incident
It’s important to document the incident as soon as possible.
Take quality photos of the damage to your home and any surrounding property.
Make a list of any personal belongings that were damaged or destroyed. This will be useful when filing an insurance claim.
Contact Insurance Company
If a tree falls on your house, it’s important to contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Here are the steps you should take:
Review Your Policy
Before filing a claim, it’s important to review your insurance policy to ensure that the damage caused by the fallen tree is covered. Check your policy for any exclusions or limitations that may apply to your situation.
If you have any questions about your policy, contact your insurance agent or company for clarification.
File a Claim
To file a claim, contact your insurance company’s claims department as soon as possible. Provide them with the details of the incident, including the date and time it occurred, the extent of the damage, and any other relevant information.
They will likely send an adjuster to assess the damage and determine the amount of coverage you are entitled to.
When filing a claim, be sure to provide your insurance company with as much information as possible. This may include:
- Photos of the damage
- Estimates from contractors or repair companies
- Receipts for any expenses related to the damage
- A detailed list of damaged items
Keep in mind that your insurance company may require you to pay a deductible before they will cover the cost of repairs. The amount of your deductible will depend on your policy.
Dealing with Roof & Siding Damage
In most cases, there will be some kind of damage to your home. It could be a minor fix or a major repair.
The best thing you can do is hire a local roofing and siding company to assess the damage.
Hire Professionals
It’s best to hire professionals to assess the damage and make the necessary repairs.
Look for licensed and insured contractors who specialize in roof and siding repairs. They have the expertise and equipment to safely repair the damage and ensure that your home is structurally sound.
Temporary Repairs
If you need to wait for a professional to get to your home, you can do the following to ‘stall’ the damage.
- Cover the damaged area with a tarp or plastic sheeting to prevent water from entering your home.
- Use duct tape to seal any holes or cracks in the roof or siding.
- Remove any debris or fallen branches from the roof or siding to prevent additional damage.
Remember, these are quick things you can do until a professional comes to see the damage.
Long-Term Repairs
Once the temporary repairs are made, it’s important to make long-term repairs to ensure that your home is safe and secure. Here are some long-term repairs you can make:
- Replace any damaged or missing shingles or tiles on the roof.
- Repair or replace any damaged or missing siding.
- Inspect the roof and siding for any hidden damage that may have been caused by the fallen tree.
- Consider reinforcing your roof and siding to prevent future damage from falling trees.
Remember to always prioritize safety when dealing with roof and siding damage.

Preventive Measures
Regular Inspection
Regular inspection of trees around your house is essential to prevent any potential damage caused by falling trees.
It is recommended to inspect your trees at least once a year, preferably before the storm season.
Look for any signs of decay, cracks, or damage to the trunk, branches, and leaves. Check for any leaning trees or branches overhanging your house or utility lines.
In addition to the trees, it’s important to get your roof inspected regularly. A roof that is at the end of its life will be more susceptible to damage from external forces.
Tree Maintenance
Maintaining your trees is crucial to prevent them from falling on your house.
Regular pruning and trimming can help keep your trees healthy and reduce the risk of falling branches. Remove any dead or diseased branches, and prune any branches that are too close to your house or power lines.
Make sure to hire a professional arborist to perform any tree maintenance, as they have the necessary skills and equipment to do the job safely.
